چکیده

W e address the problem of qualitative shape recovery f rom moving surfaces. Our analysis is unique an that we consider specular interreflections and explore the effects of both motion parallax and changes an shading. To study this si tuation we define an image flow field called the reflection flow field, which describes the motion of reflection points and the mot ion of the surface. From a kinematic analysis, we show that the reflection f low i s qualitatively different f rom the motion parallax because i t is discontinuous at or near parabolic curves. W e also show that when the gradient of the reflected image is strong, gradientbased f low measurement techniques approximate the reflection flow field and not the motion parallax. W e conclude f rom these analyses that reliable qualitative shape information i s generally available only at discontinuities in the image f low field.

Motion of specularities on low-relief surfaces: frequency domain analysis

Typical studies of the visual motion of specularities have been concerned with how to discriminate the motion of specularities from the motion of surface markings, and how to estimate the underlying surface shape. Here we take a different approach and ask whether a field of specularities gives rise to motion parallax that is similar to that of the underlying surface. The idea is that the causti...

Shape from Focus/Defocus

Imaging systems, such as eyes or video-cameras, produce a representation of the world through a map from the three-dimensional environment onto a two-dimensional one. If we are interested in interaction with the surrounding world, a necessary condition is to retrieve the spatial information lost in the imaging process. In order to do that, one can, for example, rely on prior assumptions on the ...

Volume Rendering: the added value of Stereo in real-life Applications

Volume rendering is a well known visualization technique for volumetric scalar data. Several publications already described the acceleration of this technique when using the graphical processing unit (GPU). This enables real-time viewpoint manipulations which, in turn, facilitates the interpretation. Stereo, where two slightly different images are generated for each eye, proved to be a valuable...

Understanding Differences in Depth Perception in Virtual Spaces: A Pilot Study

Accurate visual perception of 3D is essential for the success of VR systems. Humans use multiple visual cues when detecting dimensionality, including ocular disparity, ocular accommodation, shape from shading (SFS), motion parallax, occlusion, and optic flow[7][3][8]. Traditional VR systems only appeal to a few of these cues and neglect the rest. Most current systems are limited to monocular cu...
